Desired outcomes

  • Provide engineers and other participants with a briefing on technical highlights and other relevant information from regional pathfinders and design studies, with a focus on technical contributions to the SKA Reference Design.
  • Provide critical reviews of pivotal antenna and other technology concepts for the Reference Design, including a review of recent successes, outstanding issues, the success or otherwise of pathfinders in addressing key issues, and realistic cost and performance projections.
  • Provide, via the EWG task forces, input to the next round of SKA cost and performance estimation. Plan the task force activities and the process of preliminary system design for the period leading up to the early-2008 review of SKA technology by the International Engineering Advisory Committee.
  • Provide updates on current political and organizational imperatives, and obtain opinions from participants on how these imperatives should shape regional and international SKA engineering plans.
  • Via joint discussions between the SKA astronomy and engineering communities, provide a summary of the consequences of varying key SKA specifications. Produce a summary of the variational analysis discussions and a critique of one minimum (strawman) implementation of the Reference Design.
  • Present, for discussion by astronomers and engineers, an outline of an SKA operational model and assess the main implications for SKA system design and astronomical capability, particularly in areas such as evolution of instrument capacity.
