SKA PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT OFFICE
The SKA Program Development Office (SPDO) is the successor to the International SKA Project Office (ISPO) and was established on 1 January 2008. The SPDO is hosted by the University of Manchester.
The SPDO co-ordinates Work Package 2 (System Design) and Work Package 3 (Site Characteristaion) of the Preparatory Phase for the SKA (PrepSKA) project. PrepSKA is a 3 year €22 M project (€5.5 M from the EC), which commenced on 1 April 2008. It is expected that further funding for one year will be provided by the EC, extending the end date to 31 March 2012. PrepSKA provides funding for 6 senior SPDO engineers, 5 SPDO engineers and up to 5 technicians based at the University of Manchester.
The SPDO is responsible for co-ordinating the global activities of the SKA program in terms of engineering, science, site evaluation, operations, telescope simulations and public outreach. It also provides the secretariat for the SSEC. The SPDO is responsible for developing a costed design for the SKA and, over the next few years, will also carry out site characterisation studies in Australia and Southern Africa with regional partners.
