> Small dishes - Mesh surface

The 12m antenna being prototyped in India is called the pre-loaded parabolic dish (PPD). The parabolic shape is achieved using pre-loaded structural members in the backing structure. This embodies the principle that if a structure has initial stored strain energy, then under certain conditions it has the capacity to offer a larger stiffness for the same weight just as a bicycle wheel and umbrella do.

The first prototype of this antenna is under construction and is expected to be usable from 500 MHz to 8 GHz. Innovative designs for wide band feeds and receivers are being developed for the PPD.
